Dental Implant Q & A

Dental Implants

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots that support one or more prosthetic teeth. A dental implant is a metal post that’s implanted in your jawbone. You can’t technically replace permanent teeth, but dental implants provide the next best thing.

Who qualifies for dental implant surgery?

Dental implants are a good option for anyone who is over 18 with good oral hygiene. To qualify for implants, you also need to be healthy enough to undergo procedures like extractions. If you’ve been diagnosed with a chronic condition like high blood pressure or diabetes, make sure to share this with the team at Silicon Valley Smile Solutions.

Candidates for dental implants also need healthy gums and strong jawbones. If you have a history of gum disease, smoke cigarettes, or use chewing tobacco, talk to Dr. HagShenas. These issues won’t necessarily disqualify you from treatment, but they may require further procedures like a bone graft or sinus lift.

What is the process of getting dental implants?

The process for receiving dental implants takes a period of between 6-12 months. This probably seems like a long time, but it’s important to remember that dental implants can restore your smile for the rest of your life. Be patient and follow Dr. HagShenas’s instructions as closely as possible.

At your first appointment, Dr. HagShenas performs a thorough oral exam, reviews your medical history, and discusses your goals for treatment. Next, he takes a series of digital X-rays to get a better look at your jawbone and teeth.

If you have healthy gums and qualify for treatment, Dr. HagShenas administers a local anesthetic, numbing your gums and surrounding teeth. Next, he places your implants in the sockets of your missing teeth. After finishing, you’re sent home with a list of recovery instructions. Over the next three to six months, the implants fuse to your jaw.

After the fusion process is complete, you return to the office and receive an abutment — a metal post that extends from your implant. A week or two later, you return to the office, and Dr. HagShenas takes impressions of your teeth.

A dental laboratory uses your impressions to mold prosthetic teeth that mimic the look and texture of your remaining permanent teeth. At your final appointment, Dr. HagShenas attaches your finished prosthetic tooth replacement to your implant.

If you practice good oral hygiene and visit the dentist every six months for a professional cleaning and exam, your dental implants can last a lifetime.
